Therapists/Counseling Clinicians
Maybe you’ve just realized that a client with whom you are working is on the spectrum, or perhaps you’ve been getting more calls from folks on the spectrum who need help. It can be extremely difficult for individuals on the spectrum to find a supportive clinician who knows how to work with them.
I can help!
For many therapists, their current treatment methods can be altered, with supervision, to help them gain the skills to be confident and help patients, including those with autism, manage their emotions.
People on the spectrum face many challenges finding professionals equipped to work with them. Moreover, most graduate programs don’t offer many courses on modifying therapeutic methods for kids or adults on the spectrum.
As someone who’s supervised and trained professionals in medical environments and ran training programs in R1 research institutions and clinics, I can work with you to adjust what you are already going to meet the unique needs of individuals on the spectrum.
Training
I generally approach clinical training through a mentorship coaching model, altered for the needs of the specific trainee.
We’ll work together to see what would be best for you to help your patients get the treatment they need.
Don’t let an ASD diagnosis stop you from providing much-needed therapeutic services to individuals with ASD or characteristics of ASD.
Crisis Units/Medical Staff
Individuals who have autism have unique needs. If you are on a crisis unit, you’ve undoubtedly encountered a person on the spectrum who needs your help. There’s also no doubt that you could use some help working with this population.
In most cases, we can enact many techniques within your system to help people on the spectrum get better during crisis stays or other medical issues. This might mean adding visual supports or some simple language changes.
I’ll work with you and your team to help your patients feel comfortable to get better.
My Approach
While I offer didactics, I can also take a personalized approach to working with your staff.
I’ll take the time to see your staff, your setting, the strengths and weaknesses, and what your patients need. I don’t just give you a “toolbox.” I work with you to see what you need, what makes sense in your environment, and make personalized recommendations.
Individuals with autism are more likely to enter crisis and more likely to require support for longer periods.
Don’t turn away people in need.
Let’s talk to see how we can work together to get you the training to work with this underserved population.
