Diagnostics for Adults

You’ve been wondering why things are a little harder for you.

You’re smart, but socially it seems like it’s harder for others to understand you… and for you to understand them.

Are people talking in code? How does everyone else know this code?

Your opinions about foods… people don’t understand them. Mixing foods is a big deal to you: the textures, the smells… it matters. It’s not that you’re picky – it’s something else.

Maybe you remember being picked on because you had different mannerisms – a different way of moving. You didn’t quite understand when people were teasing you in the moment, or maybe you didn’t really care at the time. But now, as you get older, it’s all starting to add up.

What’s the deal? Is it that your brain works differently? Is that why clothes felt too tight, noises are too loud, or your emotions are “too big for your body”?

You’ve learned to get through the day, but it’s a lot of work.

You learned to watch for signs – like what people do when they’re bored with what you’re saying.

And you’ve got a few techniques to make it through meeting new people.

You’re doing what you think you’re supposed to do, but it’s not always working. You follow the rules, but somehow you feel like you’re missing something.

None of this is easy. In fact, it’s downright exhausting.

If you could have just “done it” by now, you would have.

Your family, friends, and coworkers get frustrated and angry with you.

Why can’t you listen?

Why can’t they listen?

Why can’t they see you?

You’re a step behind. People always tell you what you’re doing wrong – how you’re not living up to your potential.

You don’t need to do this alone…

I can give you a diagnostic evaluation to help you understand what’s happening around you – how your actions affect others and how other people impact you. I can help you understand what it all means.

A diagnostic evaluation will provide you with a safe place to be yourself, insight into your life, and concrete tips for moving forward, allowing you to be the best possible version of yourself. This is about getting what you want out of life, not just determining whether you have a diagnosis.

The evaluation will vary depending on what you need, but here are some of the things you might see:

Interviews

I’ll interview you and others close to you (as you permit). This will involve talking about your life, what’s working and what isn’t working. This isn’t just a diagnosis. It’s a diagnosis in context.

Observations

I’ll complete the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) or any other appropriate assessments.

Discussion

After I’ve interviewed you and completed other assessments like the ADOS, we’ll meet to review the results, share my impressions, and offer you helpful resources.

We can review all your questions and start to plan out your next steps.

Written Report

I’ll give you a written report summarizing all the findings, our discussion, and my recommendations for the next steps. This will be yours to keep and share with whomever you feel appropriate.

Don’t wait to get help.

The wondering, confusion, uncertainty – doesn’t have to last.
